Check out some of our customer feedback HERE.
Most people start by asking about the durability and lifespan of a skin boat, which depends on the construction and the user. In general a well built skin boat has a strength to weight ratio similar to any other type of construction. What is unique is that we can build durable boats in weight ranges that would make other types of construction too fragile. To help you understand the subject better we created this YouTube video about Skin-on-Frame Durability.
To commission a custom skin boat, start by sending an email to brian@capefalconkayaks.com with your height, weight, which design you are interested in, a bit about you and your goals for the craft and any questions you have. You can stick with one of our standard lay-ups for a nice balance between weight and durability, or we can go lighter or heavier depending on your specific needs. All of our boats come in a variety of sizes and can easily be customized further to accommodate for individual needs. We sell a lot of boats to people who need custom fitting, and people who can't (or just don't want to!) carry around a heavy boat anymore. Our pack canoes can be made as light as 18lbs, and our kayaks as light as 24. (30 is typical).
Once you've decided on a boat we'll get you on the schedule and start building. To help you decide on a color we've created this Color Selection Chart with the various colors we recommend. We are happy to take photos of your boat being built, just ask! Generally speaking we try to finish custom orders within 30 days, and if it's going to take longer than that we will tell you before you commit.
Once the boat is complete, you can pick it up in person in Portland, Oregon, or we can ship it to you using KAS transport, a small boat specific shipper. KAS has several trucks circling the country and shipping times depend on where they are at any given time. Again, we can get you a shipping cost and time estimate before you commit. Typically boats to the east coast cost around $350 to ship, and that price goes down the closer you get to us here in Portland.
