Hosting a class

For those looking to travel, we teach classes at some truly amazing locations, but for people who'd prefer to build closer to home, hosting a class offers a great way to build a boat while saving money and time.   Presently I'm willing to travel anywhere in Oregon, Washington, California, Idaho, Montana, and Utah to teach groups of 5-6 students, and will teach smaller classes in Oregon and Washington.   (East coast is possible but I try not to do more than 1 a year)

What I need to make it happen:

Lead time:  It's usually good to have a few months to get things ready.
People:  I need a few people willing to build to get started.  More can be recruited from my lists.
Space:   Each kayak needs approximately 7' x 25'.   Six kayaks fit perfectly in 25' x 40'.
Light:  Good lighting is essential.
Heat:  The space must be kept above 60 degrees but below 80.
Work benches:  Two 2'x8' work benches will need to be constructed.   I have a simple, cheap plan for these.
Tools:  We need a decent band saw.  Students will bring a small list of simple hand tools,  I bring the rest.

How it all works:

I show up the day before with all materials prepped.  It's nice to meet people that afternoon.  The class runs 8-5:30 for the first 4 days and then the days get progressively easier.  On the seventh day we go paddling!   All students will build a kayak and paddle which is included in the price.

How much it costs:

For a class of 5-6 people cost is 1600 per kayak.  $600 is available to pay for the space if renting, if the cost is more that cost is split among students and added.   If the space belongs to the host AND the class is full, they can take that $600 as a discount.

For classes of 3-4 people cost is 1700 per kayak.   $400 space rental or discount allowance.

For classes of 2 people cost is 1800 per kayak.

Private 1 on 1 instruction is 2000 per kayak.

All of these options usually cost less than traveling to a venue, the flipside being that you miss out on the venue!  Building your own kayak is a ton of fun wherever you decide to build.  See you in class!
